And how to get it? I’m not a big fish eater. OK, I don’t eat ANY fish. This is also a problem for my DHA intake. The funny thing is, I grew up in a coastal town in Massachusetts and even lived right beside Scotty’s, the most popular lobster pound in the village. My whole family is big on seafood, but for me, it’s the smell. I can’t tolerate even the slightest bit of a fishy odor. And don’t even try to make tuna fish in my kitchen. I know I have a problem and it’s very disappointing to my husband. My daughter has unfortunately followed in my footsteps and won’t touch fish either. Don’t get me wrong, I know it is an incredibly healthy part of the human diet, but I won’t cook it because of the smell. I do encourage her to eat it, but apparently what isn’t good enough for the goose, also isn’t good enough for the…well you get the picture.
As a result, I must take a DHA supplement. Fine, as long as it isn’t fish oil because I don’t want to be burping that up all day. I’ve finally adjusted to the two prenatal supplements when, now I am being told, I have very low iron. What? Another supplement? I know what iron supplements do to the system, and I’m not willing to suffer through that side effect. When I received the news in a letter from my OB’s office, it was actually via the results of the glucose test -which I passed with flying colors thankyouverymuch. I guess that whole bag of Milano cookies I ate the night before had no effect on my glucose levels. Hear that husband? I can eat bags of cookies before bed! Anyway- these results also came with a list of iron-rich foods. And now you know where I am going with this. Topping the list- fish. Ugh, why??
Alas, I have found a way around this! No, I am not eating mounds of spinach, although I did just teach my daughter how to cook this for me as it couldn’t hurt to put something green in my system every once in a while. I'm now receiving my iron through these amazing all-natural products called Bellybars. They come in a variety of nutritious whole-grain bars. Bellybar also makes delicious shakes and chews (They seriously taste like Starbursts), that are low-fat and packed with nutrients. And guess what I discovered today? They are loaded with 100% iron and rich in DHA! Bellybar- you have made my day.
And for all of you moms-to-be, new nursing moms, and those hoping to become moms, these products are a delicious way to consume your prenatal nutrients.

I received a variety package of Belly bars to facilitate this review. I have also been buying up all of the available bars at my local retailer.

Seems like a very good product. Best part is that it tastes good and no side effects that one can dread of!
I think anyone can eat it if they wanted more iron even if its due to regular anemia!

I totally feel for you regarding fish (gag!) and unfortunately for me, I can't stand meat/poultry either, so I'm out DHA and iron (along with B12, Omega-3's and protein). My 1 yo is still EBF so I'm nursing him full-time and I worry constantly if he's getting the right nutrients from me (prob. not :( I'm so happy to learn that the Bellybar products are chock full of those important nutrients many of us are lacking, really puts a mamas mind at ease and makes life so much easier to balance by getting proper nutrition through yummy eats!

I just bought some Belly Bars (the yogurt covered ones)...they taste like fish! I looked and the DHA comes from algae...but wow, it is a really strong flavor. If you don't eat fish, you might notice.
If you are worried about DHA and don't eat fish...try taking Expecta capsules....no fish, lots of DHA!
